AuroGene™ is a new technology for the detection of DNA and RNA on substrate surface using nano-particles. The approach is significantly different from the previous methods of using fluorescent tags or gold nanoparticles with oligonucleotides attached or by using biotin-streptavidin interaction. The AuroGene™ nanoparticles are bind to surface spots where DNA or RNA are located due to electrostatic (e.g., ionic) attraction of the cationic particles and the anionic phosphate groups in the target DNA or RNA backbone. The most important aspect of this detection approach is that no chemical modification of target molecules is required for the detection. The number of hybridized molecules can be quantified by detecting the absorption or light scattered by nanoparticles using a flatbed scanner instead of expensive confocal laser scanners required by conventional fluorescent microarray technologies. The ionic labeling by nanoparticles is fast, simple and sensitive. The method greatly simplifies procedures and reduces the cost of microarray analysis.
